Sooke District Lioness "Santa Sacks"

RETURN TO PHOTOS PAGE

Sooke Santa Sacks are an annual project of the Sooke District Lions Club, started in 2004-2005 to bring Christmas gifts to families in need. Fundraising for this project is done through our annual Oktoberfest. Club members shop for each family according to age and needs, as requested by CASA. Santas Anonymous also contribute toys for our Santa Sacks. Lioness Jean W makes a Christmas card for each Santa Sack, each one numbered to correspond with the lists at CASA and Ayre Manor to maintain the privacy of the recipients. In 2008 and 2009, we also gave Santa Sacks and small gifts to residents at the Complex Care Ward at Ayre Manor. Leftover clothing items such as the lovely sweaters made by a resident at Rose Manor as well as extra toques and scarves were given to CASA and to Sooke Transition House to have on hand for emergency needs.

CASA volunteer Lynn and Gail

CASA volunteer Lynn with Lioness Gail N. December 17th - the Santa Sacks were delivered just before the first of the big snowstorms made Sooke's roads a nightmare. Sooke Lion Dave N drove the "stuffed Santa van" and Lioness Sue W's husband, Don met us with boxes of cookies for each family.

Bags of toys for Santa Sacks

Just a sample of the bags of toys waiting to be stuffed into our Santa Sacks. We thank Santas Anonymous for their great contribution. We also received toys from the Sooke Lions Breakfast with Santa, and new toys donated by various people, including one family who gave money to our toy fund, in lieu of presents to eachother. The rest of our toys and books were purchased with the money we raised at Oktoberfest.

Toddler and baby toys

These are some of the toys for babies and toddlers.

Lionesses with the Christmas cards

Lionesses Sue W and Barb Y preparing the Christmas cards for each Santa Sack. The cards are made by Lioness Jean W and identify each sack with a number only, so that CASA can hand them out to the appropriate families.

Lionesses Becky L, Heather N and Barb Y selecting extras for Santa Sacks. We also have an array of socks, toques, scarves etc. and some toiletries. Many were donated by people such as Emma (in the picture on left below). The rest were purchased by Lioness with the funds we have raised for this annual event.

Finished at last! 49 Santa Sacks for CASA, and we have already moved out the 24 for Port Renfrew Elementary School.
